Het was op zijn zachtst gezegd een bijzonder jaar. Dat geldt ook voor de filmwereld. Hoe dan ook, de Oscars zijn uitgereikt. Later dan normaal en anders dan normaal.

Opvallend was bij de nominaties al dat er 70 vrouwen goed waren voor maarliefst 76 nominaties. Dat is volgens de Academy een record. Daarvan kregen ook nog eens voor de eerste keer 2 vrouwen een nominatie voor Beste Regie, Chloé Zhao voor Nomadland en Emerald Fennell voor Promising Young Woman. Het is Chloe Zhao die de Oscar pakte voor die categorie, maar ook Beste Film en hoofdrolspeelster Frances McDormand pakte de Oscar voor Beste Vrouwelijke Hoofdrol.
